About this position
Are you passionate about advancing the transition to sustainable transport and energy systems? Chalmers seeks a Doctoral student in hydrogen technology through environmental and energy systems analysis (REF 2026-0423).
About us
Research focuses on long-term, often global, perspectives on future renewable fuels for transport: feasibility of energy transitions, cost-effectiveness, and environmental effects, using life cycle assessments, techno-economic assessments, and cost-minimizing models in a carbon-constrained world.
The position is hosted by the Maritime Environmental Sciences division at the Department of Environmental and Energy Sciences. The team (senior researchers, doctoral students, and postdocs) works interdisciplinarily with other Chalmers groups and with international academic and industry partners.
About the research project
The focus is hydrogen within the HyLo collaboration (hydrogen trucks and refueling infrastructure) and the TechForH2 competence center (Technologies and innovations for a future green hydrogen economy).
Initial research addresses hydrogen storage and distribution from environmental and cost perspectives, including a model of hydrogen refueling stations to compare technology options under scenarios (cost, efficiency, materials, potential leakages, etc.).
Who we are looking for
Mandatory requirements include a Master's degree (masterexamen 120 credits or magisterexamen 60 credits; 4-year Bachelor's accepted for degrees earned outside Sweden) in a relevant field such as industrial ecology, energy technology, or applied mathematics, with specialization in energy systems analysis, energy modelling, or life cycle assessment; proven data analysis and programming (e.g. GAMS, Matlab, Python or R); strong English; and motivation for interdisciplinary systems research on the transport sector transition. Knowledge of alternative transport fuels strengthens the application.
What you will do
- Take advanced courses in the Graduate school of Energy, Environment and Systems
- Develop scientific concepts and communicate results orally and in writing
- Teaching or other duties typically corresponding to 10–20% of working hours
- Literature review, study design, interaction with companies and authorities, empirical data analysis, and dissemination to journals, industry, and the public, within TechForH2
Contract terms
- Fully funded from start
- Fixed-term four years; teaching up to 20% may extend up to five years
- Starting salary 35,725 SEK per month (valid from 1 May 2026)
- Physical presence required; valid residence permit by study start
