About this position

1. Introduction

The Radboud Institute for Culture & History (RICH) is a research institute dedicated to exploring the present and the past through the lenses of culture, history, literature, and art. Would you like to research understandings of the dynamics of an interconnected world, in relation to issues such as Europe’s difficult heritage, contested pasts, inequalities and sustainability? If so, then you have a part to play as a PhD candidate at the Radboud Institute for Culture & History.

2. Job description

As a PhD candidate, you will participate in the Graduate School for the Humanities. As part of this position, you will write a PhD dissertationthesis and provide your services to the Faculty of Arts at Radboud University for a period of six months. As this position is embedded in the Radboud Institute for Culture and History, your dissertationthesis should be in accordance with one of the research groups of this institute. Descriptions of these research groups can be found on the RICH website .

As a PhD candidate at RICH, you will be part of the Graduate School for the Humanities. You will devote 75% of your time will be devoted to the research for and writing of your PhD thesis. The other 25% are for training and academic service to the Faculty of Arts, including teaching.

3. Profile

  • You have a Master’s degree in one of the disciplines related to RICH or expect to complete the degree before 15 September 2026 at the latest.
  • You are results-oriented, have a good command of English and good writing skills.
  • Demonstrable research experience, for instance in the form of a research assistantship, will be considered an advantage.

We offer

  • We will give you a temporary employment contract (0.8 FTE 5- year contract - 1.0 FTE 4- year contract) of 1.5 years, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, your contract will be extended by 2.5 years (4-year contract) or 3.5 years (5-year contract).
  • You will receive a starting salary of €3,204 gross per month based on a 38-hour working week, which will increase to €4,051 from the fourth year onwards ( salary scale P ).
  • You will receive an 8% holiday allowance and an 8,3% end-of-year bonus.
  • You will receive extra days off. With full-time employment, you can choose between 30 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the statutory 20.
