Substitute Lecturer in Economic History, 50%, 3 months

The Department of Economic History is a research-intensive department employing approximately 70 people: researchers, teachers, technical/administrative staff and doctoral students. The Department has an extensive doctoral programme and coordinates two international Master’s programmes. The Department has a well-established reputation for broad-ranging research with an emphasis on long-term processes, using economic theory and quantitative methods as important research tools. Strong research areas include economic growth and structural change, innovation, energy and sustainability, development economics, economic demography, financial history, and education and the labour market. Lund University invites applications for a position as substitute lecturer in Economic History. The position is for three months, starting on 30 October 2026, and is based at the Department of Economic History, Lund University School of Economics and Management. The position is 50 per cent of full time.

Subject area and duties

The subject area is economic history with a focus on energy transitions and environmental history.

The position consists of teaching, and administrative duties may also be included. Teaching may take place at undergraduate and advanced levels and will focus on sustainable development, climate crises and energy transitions from a long-term environmental and economic-historical perspective.

Teaching will be conducted in both Swedish and English.

Eligibility

Eligibility requires a doctoral degree in Economic History and demonstrated teaching expertise.

Requirements

Very good proficiency in spoken and written English and Swedish.

Completed higher education pedagogy training equivalent to at least five weeks, or equivalent knowledge.

Assessment criteria

Lund University School of Economics and Management strives to maintain a balance between research and education in all appointments. Therefore, equal weight will be given to scholarly and teaching expertise in the assessment of applicants. Administrative skills will also be taken into consideration.

In the overall assessment of scholarly expertise, a doctoral degree in Economic History and publications in journals or with academic publishers using international peer-review systems are considered strong merits, as are experience of national and international collaboration and participation in research networks. Furthermore, the applicant’s ability to engage with wider society and communicate research findings will be taken into account.

The overall assessment of teaching qualifications includes higher education pedagogy training, teaching experience and teaching expertise. Experience of teaching and course development in Economic History with a focus on sustainable development, climate crises and energy transitions from a long-term environmental and economic-historical perspective is considered a merit. In the overall assessment, particular weight will be given to the applicant’s ability, based on documented teaching experience and subject-specific expertise, to contribute immediately to teaching within the specified focus area.

Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and expertise may complement and strengthen education and research within the Department.
