Your personal sphere of influence

The Organic Synthesis Group of Prof. Maulide in the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Vienna is currently seeking a PhD student with research experience in organic chemistry and natural product synthesis for 3 years temporary employment relationship.

Our Team currently consists of 9 post docs, 13 prae docs, 2 senior scientists and administrative colleagues.

The employment duration is 3 years . Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declation.

Your future tasks

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • Studies on the stereoselective preparation of organic compounds. Special emphasis on the development of new synthetic methodologies, with a focus on stereoselective synthesis (particularly through chirality transfer processes), methods for conjugate addition, functionalisation of alkenes by electrophilic activation and photochemical reactions, reaction monitoring through in situ IR spectroscopy and the chemistry of vinyl silanes.
  • We expect a completed dissertation agreement (latest within 12-18 months).
  • You work on your dissertation and its completion.
  • You teach within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
  • You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration and have experience in academic writing.
  • IT user skills: e.g. Microsoft Office, ChemOffice.
  • You communicate in English (written and spoken).

This is part of your personality

  • Completed Master's degree or Diploma, in the field of Chemistry with profound knowledge and practical experience in the field of Organic Synthesis.
  • Ability to work independently in the field of organic synthesis.
  • Experience with the chemistry of organophosphorus compounds and the synthesis of peptides and silyl ketene acetals is required.
  • Experience with the chemistry of vinyl silanes, especially there reactions with electrophiles.
  • Experience with in situ IR spectroscopy for the monitoring of fast reactions.
  • Experience with photocatalysed reactions of reactive intermediates, especially in the context of alkene difunctionalisation.
  • Experience with photocatalytic fragmentation reactions is advantageous.
  • Extensive experience with (Lewis)-acid-catalysed organic transformations is advantageous.
  • Extensive experience with spectroscopic methods (NMR, HRMS, IR, UV/vis).
  • Experience with writing scientific publications.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • IT user skills: e.g. Microsoft Office, ChemOffice
  • You should be a team player with high social skills
