Compare the complete package

Headline salary is only one part of an offer. Tax, pension, health insurance, leave, relocation support, contract length, and local living costs materially change the comparison. A lower gross figure with strong social coverage can outperform a higher headline stipend.

  • Check whether salary figures are monthly or annual and gross or net.
  • Review collective agreements and probation or fixed-term rules.
  • Confirm degree recognition and language requirements for the role and for daily life.

Application conventions differ

Some countries expect early contact with a named PI; others forbid informal lobbying and route everything through a portal. Teaching statements, publication lists, and reference letter timing also vary. Copy the process in the advert, not a blog post about “how academia works in Europe” in general.

Use primary sources

Employment, tax, and immigration rules change. Confirm details with the employer and official national authorities before making decisions. Use country filters on ResearchJobsEurope to browse openings, then open each official source URL before you invest in a full application.

This guide is general information, not legal, tax, immigration, or financial advice. Confirm current requirements with the employer and relevant public authority.
