Fellow, associate, assistant
In the UK, Research Assistant is often pre- or peri-PhD; Research Associate is commonly a postdoctoral grade; Research Fellow can mean senior postdoc or an independently won fellowship—read the grade and person spec. Ireland uses overlapping vocabulary with local grade structures; do not assume identical salary bands across the two systems.
Fixed-term and funding-linked posts
Many research posts end when the grant ends. The advert should state the funding end date or contract length. Internal-only fellowships restricted to current employees are real jobs for some candidates and noise for everyone else—check eligibility first.
- Grade / spine point language without a number still points to a formal scale—ask HR.
- Clinical Research Fellow roles may require GMC or equivalent registration.
- Teaching-only lecturer tracks are distinct from research and teaching lectureships.

CoreHR, Oracle, and similar systems are the submission path. Campus labels such as “Oxford Road” in a scraped title are location chrome, not part of the scientific role name.
