About this position

The Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in Economics. The position is embedded in the Applied Economics section.

Your job

The Applied Economics section brings together researchers working in a large variety of areas of applied economics (e.g. public economics, behavioral economics, health economics, economics of crime, regional/urban economics, development economics, labour economics, economics of education, and other applied fields) with researchers working on the history, methodology, and/or philosophy of economics. Research and teaching in the section is typically empirical, policy-oriented, and sometimes multidisciplinary.

We welcome candidates from any field of applied economics. The position involves teaching in areas where economics is itself the object of study. These areas include the history of economics, economic history, philosophy of economics, and economic/econometric methodology, such as for example the courses “Contemporary Economics in Historical Perspectives” or “Ethical and Historical Reflections”. Candidates should explain in their cover letter how their research connects to these teaching areas.

The position includes 60% teaching time (including 5% governance), and 40% research time.

The candidate’s responsibilities will include

  • conducting high-quality research in economics or a closely related field;
  • teaching undergraduate and graduate courses within U.S.E.;
  • contributing to courses at U.S.E. in which economics is reflected upon (e.g. history of economic thought, philosophy of economics, economic methodology, or related themes) but also teach at the Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) programme to which U.S.E. contributes;
  • engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration within Utrecht University, for example with the Descartes Centre for the History and Philosophy of the Sciences and the Humanities, a university-wide center that promotes critical reflection on academic disciplines, methods, and the role of knowledge in society.

Your qualities

The successful candidate is expected to

  • hold a PhD, or be close to finishing their degree, in economics or another field related to the position;
  • have a potential for excellence in research, targeting publications in top international peer-reviewed journals;
  • be able to inspire students from undergraduate to graduate levels, and prior teaching experience is a plus;
  • have excellent communication and management skills;
  • have an excellent command of spoken and written English.

Utrecht School of Economics offers Master programs in English and bachelor programs in both English and Dutch. A good command of English is essential. Knowledge of Dutch is an asset. We expect the candidate to learn Dutch and offer support.

We are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming academic environment. We particularly encourage applications from women/non-binary people, members of underrepresented groups, individuals with disabilities, and others who would contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

Our offer

We offer

  • a position (0.8-1.0 FTE) for 12 months. After a positive evaluation the position will be made permanent;
  • a full-time monthly gross salary between €4925,- and €6682,- in scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (CAO);
  • 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities.

In addition to the employment conditions from the CAO for Dutch Universities, Utrecht University has a number of its own arrangements. These include agreements on professional development , leave arrangements, sports and cultural schemes and you get discounts on software and other IT products.
