About this position

Do you want to be part of a leading research environment in renewable energy and advance your research at Sweden's largest Faculty of Science and Technology? We are now recruiting an Assistant Professor who will contribute to the development of research and education in offshore renewable energy.

The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts multidisciplinary research across the full spectrum of electrical engineering, from technologies for renewable electricity generation and the electrification of the transport sector to 5G/6G communications and smart electrical sensors. The successful candidate will join the Division of Electricity, an international and interdisciplinary research environment with strong expertise in computational science, energy systems, fluid mechanics, and the sustainable energy transition. Research is carried out in close collaboration with national and international universities, research institutes, and industrial partners. The division provides access to advanced high-performance computing infrastructure as well as experimental and numerical facilities supporting research on next-generation offshore energy systems.

More information about the Department of Electrical Engineering is available at: https://www.uu.se/en/department/electrical-engineering

Subject Area

We seek an outstanding early-career researcher who wishes to develop research and education in advanced numerical methods for modelling and simulation of complex physical processes associated with offshore energy systems.

The successful candidate is expected to establish an independent and internationally competitive research programme focusing on numerical modelling of fluid–structure interaction and the development of computational tools for next-generation renewable energy technologies. The research should contribute to robust, efficient, and sustainable solutions for floating offshore wind, wave energy, and other marine renewable energy systems.

Duties

You will work with

  • Conduct research of the highest international quality. This includes developing and leading an independent research group, collaborating with researchers within the department as well as with international research groups and industry, and contributing to the strategic development of the department and the university. The position also includes actively seeking and securing external research funding.
  • Teaching. Teaching responsibilities include course coordination, course administration, and supervision of undergraduate, master's and PhD students. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to the development of courses in renewable energy engineering.
  • Participate in departmental administration and contribute to the general academic responsibilities of the Department of Electrical Engineering. This includes serving on committees, taking on responsibilities beyond one's own research and teaching, participating in the evaluation and development of educational and research activities, collaborating with colleagues, and contributing to a constructive academic environment.
  • Maintain up-to-date expertise within the subject area and follow developments in society that are relevant to the position at Uppsala University. Among qualified applicants, selection will be based primarily on scientific and pedagogical excellence, with particular emphasis placed on scientific merits. The ability to secure external research funding, collaborate effectively with external stakeholders, and demonstrate leadership potential will also be considered.

Qualifications required

You must have

  • A PhD in a field relevant to the position, such as engineering mechanics, energy systems, fluid mechanics, or a related discipline. Priority will be given to applicants who obtained their doctoral degree, or achieved equivalent competence, no more than seven years before the closing date for applications.
  • Demonstrated scientific excellence in offshore renewable energy, including research relevant to wave energy, floating offshore wind, and related marine renewable energy technologies. Applicants should have documented expertise in one or more of the following areas: fluid mechanics, numerical methods, high-performance computing, optimisation, and the design of complex energy systems. Scientific excellence must be demonstrated through publications in leading international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise, with particular emphasis on experience in theoretical, numerical, and experimental education. The ability to integrate research, subject-specific pedagogy, and higher education pedagogy into teaching is considered essential.
  • Completed higher education teaching training equivalent to at least five weeks, or possess equivalent documented competence. If special circumstances apply, such training may be completed during the first two years of employment.
  • Documented ability to teach in Swedish or English.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively and otherwise meet the personal suitability requirements necessary to perform the duties of the position.
  • A documented ability to obtain external research funding in competitive calls. Particular merit will be given to prestigious national or European research grants.
  • Scientific and pedagogical expertise relevant to the subject area and duties of the position.

Other desirable/valuable qualifications

It would be an advantage if you have

  • Experience in the development and application of scientific software or numerical methods for offshore renewable energy systems, including physics-based modelling as well as emerging data-driven and AI-enabled approaches.
  • Experience in high-performance scientific computing of offshore renewable energy systems, including advanced CFD-simulations.
  • Experience of industrial research collaborations relevant to the position.
  • International research collaborations and a strong international research network.
