About this position
The research fits into the research of NUMA in the research group of Dirk Nuyens which focuses on quasi-Monte Carlo methods for numerical integration and function approximation.

Project
There are a lot of algorithms to approximate high-dimensional functions. They often are based on samples. We consider the case in which the sample nodes can be chosen and are interested in worst-case errors of e.g. the L2 error over the unit ball of a weighted Sobolev space of dominating mixed smoothness. We are in particular interested in structured point sets from quasi-Monte Carlo methods.
Profile
The candidate has a master degree in Mathematical Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science or equivalent with a strong desire to mathematically analyse when and how a numerical algorithm works.
Offer
The PhD program in Leuven is a 4 year program. The initial contract is for one year. After nine months the student is evaluated and the outcome determines if the PhD program can be continued.
