About this position

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Liver disease is an expanding and attractive field with many unanswered questions and the potential for long-term scientific careers. The Hagström research group at Karolinska Institutet has a long history and focuses on clinical and epidemiological studies in the field of liver diseases, especially within metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) which currently have a global prevalence of 38%.

Within our research group you will find an opportunity to develop yourself and use unique data sets to improve our understanding of liver diseases and contribute to world-leading research.

We offer an engaging interdisciplinary research environment where you may contribute to high-quality research on an internationally competitive level. The group consists of clinicians, epidemiologists, biostatisticians and research nurses, both locally and internationally. You will use detailed data from multiple cohorts ranging from clinical cohort with granular information on biomarkers and treatments to nationwide registers. The aim of this postdoctoral position is to advance the understanding of the bidirectional cardio-hepatic relationship, with the ultimate goal of improving the identification of patients at risk of end-stage liver disease and enabling earlier detection and treatment.

Your mission

Now, we are searching for one dedicated postdoc with experience in Epidemiology and Biostatistics to lead an exciting project on the association between liver and heart diseases. Your main role will be to generate new evidence on the cardio-hepatic relationship and translate epidemiological insights into improved identification of individuals at risk of end-stage liver disease. By integrating detailed clinical data with large-scale population-based resources and applying advanced epidemiological and biostatistical methods, you may contribute to understanding disease pathways, improving risk stratification, and ultimately supporting earlier detection and more targeted prevention and treatment.

The role may involve travelling to other countries when needed. You will have the opportunity to work within an interdisciplinary as well as an international setting. At our department, you will have vast opportunities to engage and participate in various research forums, outside as well as inside the department. There will also be an opportunity to engage in teaching for the interested candidate. We are located at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, which is an inclusive workplace, encouraging collaborative departmental and interdisciplinary research. This is a position of two years with possibility of extension.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

You have a PhD in fields such as epidemiology or biostatistics, alternatively a strong profile in such fields. Previous experience of Swedish healthcare and Swedish register data is a merit. Further, we anticipate that you are fluent in written and spoken English, have a strong track record in writing and publishing scientific papers in high-tier journals, are a social and interactive person with a natural talent in collaborating with persons outside of your field.

We value a drive to independently design and conduct studies. You are familiar in using statistical software such as R, SAS, or STATA.

Personal qualities that are considered desirable

  • A driven personality, willing to make own decisions.
  • Ability to collaborate both within and beyond the group.
  • A good team player with interpersonal skills and a considerate manner.
  • Willing to learn and collaborate with persons outside your own field.
  • Structured and flexible.

We place great importance on personal suitability.
