About this position
Description of the workplace
The Neurodegenerative Research group is focused on defining and understanding biological processes in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. We analyze large datasets collected from patients and cognitively unimpaired volunteers, who undergo extensive testing with neuroimaging, biomarker measurements and neuropsychological testing. Our group applies sophisticated statistical tools to these unique and state-of-the-art datasets in order to model processes related to aging and disease. The postdoctoral researcher will join a growing multidisciplinary team of neuroscientists, statisticians, biologists and engineers, who are dedicated to increasing understanding of neurodegenerative diseases. The long-term goal of our research is to contribute to the development of new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases where effective treatments are still lacking.
The research group is led by Dr. Jacob Vogel, and this position is located at the Biomedical Center (BMC) in Lund. Read more about our research group here .
We aim to create a positive, supportive and inclusive work environment based on respect and mutual consideration. We strive to create an environment that promotes development and is stimulating to all employees.
Project description
Our lab is investigating heterogeneity in the expression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology in living humans. We have identified major subtypes of AD, and we are using various approaches to further understand them, including multi-omics data, postmortem histopathology, and assembly of massive tau-PET imaging datasets. The postdoctoral fellow will spearhead analyses that will comprehensively model the spatiotemporal spread of tau across several datasets, and will validate this model across multiple modalities.
Tasks and responsibilities
At Lund University, a postdoctoral position shall provide the opportunity for scientific and pedagogical merit. There is primarily scope for merit in research, but also for some higher education pedagogical training. Teaching may also be included in the duties.
The postdoctoral researcher will aid these pursuits through processing and analyzing large-scale tau-PET data, adapting existing analysis pipelines, and analyzing new data. Other tasks within the research group may also be assigned. The position may also involve international travel to support training and career development.
Qualifications
Requirements for the position are
- Doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree in engineering, neuroscience, statistics, quantitative biology, physics, mathematics or a related discipline. The doctoral defence must have been passed no later than the date on which the appointment decision is made.
- Ability to develop and conduct high-quality research.
- Pedagogic skills.
- Fluency in Python and/or R.
- Experience with curation, preprocessing and/or analysis of neuroimaging data.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
- High intrinsic motivation.
- Experience working in the field of neurodegenerative disease.
- Direct experience with analysis of tau-PET data.
- Experience working with large (N>2000) sample sizes.
Merits for the position are
- Applicants who graduated no more than three years before the closing date for applications
- Strong publication track record indicating ability to complete high-impact work
- Familiarity with Git and GitHub
- Competence using Linux-based high-performance parallel computing systems
The assessment of applicants will primarily be based on their scientific merits and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on scientific ability within the subject area.
