About this position

Department of Traumatology

Professorship of Traumatology of the Musculoskeletal System 100 %

Start of employment 1 February 2028, or by agreement, permanent employment

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zurich invites applications for a Professorship and Chair of Traumatology of the Musculoskeletal System. The professor will be appointed as head of the Department of Traumatology of the University Hospital Zurich and represents the subject in research, clinical care, and teaching. The Department of Traumatology specializes in the treatment of complex trauma and injury consequences, particularly the management of polytrauma as well as abdominal and thoracic injuries. The care of patients with primarily elective orthopedic conditions is mainly provided at the University Hospital Balgrist.

We are looking for a dynamic, integrative, and collaborative personality, with extensive clinical expertise and scientific experience in traumatology, particularly in polytrauma research and the care of polytrauma patients. A habilitation or an equivalent academic qualification, as well as board certification in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology of the Musculoskeletal System, and subspecialty certification in spinal surgery or an equivalent foreign qualification, are required. Willingness to cooperate with related disciplines at USZ and the University Hospital Balgrist is expected.

As you will take on the leadership of the Department of Traumatology, you should have experience in leading or serving as deputy head of a university hospital department. In addition, you should have comprehensive experience in leading a research group, acquiring competitive third-party funding, and contributing to student teaching, supervision of academic theses, and the promotion of early-career researchers.

The University of Zurich offers exceptional conditions for cutting-edge medical research. With its four university hospitals, the University of Zurich provides access to extensive patient populations, interdisciplinary research networks, and clinical expertise across all age groups and specialties. Its proximity to ETH Zurich offers additional opportunities for collaboration in computational medicine, bioengineering, data science, and AI-driven medicine. As a result, the Zurich location offers a translational ecosystem that spans from basic research to clinical application.

German language skills at level B2 of the common European framework of reference for languages should be available or must be acquired within a reasonable period of time. The University of Zurich is an equal opportunities employer and in particular strives to increase the percentage of women in leading positions. Therefore, qualified female researchers are encouraged to apply.

The University of Zurich sees researchers as modern leadership personalities who conduct excellent research - taking into account the Open Science principles - through their own research projects, promote excellent young researchers and who help to shape a forward-looking university with innovative research-based teaching.
