About this position

Together, Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences form a higher education community that places faith in people and scientific knowledge. Leading experts in the fields of technology, health and society are changing the world at Finland's second largest multidisciplinary higher education institution. www.tuni.fi/en

The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University is inviting applications for two tenure-track positions in computational physics.

The Computational Physics Laboratory is one of the three laboratories of the the Physics Unit of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS). Our research combines mathematical and physical modelling, numerical simulations, data-driven methods, and high-performance computing to study materials, low-dimensional systems, quantum matter and information, statistical physics and complex systems, biophysics, and complex phenomena across multiple scales.

We address both fundamental and applied research challenges, with application areas ranging from quantum technologies and advanced materials to computational cardiology and other interdisciplinary problems at the interface of physics, engineering, and life sciences. By bridging theory, experiments, data, and computation, we develop next-generation methods that advance scientific discovery and technological innovation.

As an active member of InstituteQ, the Finnish quantum institute, we contribute to the national quantum ecosystem spanning quantum science, technologies, and innovation. Leveraging Finland's world-class computing infrastructure provided by CSC – IT Center for Science and complemented by our local Tampere Center for Scientific Computing (TCSC) facilities, we increasingly integrate machine learning and artificial intelligence into modelling, simulation, inverse problems, and scientific data analysis.

Tampere University provides a distinctive setting for computational physics in Finland: a technology-oriented, multidisciplinary university where fundamental physics is closely connected to engineering, data science, AI, materials research, health-related modelling and high-performance computing. The successful candidates will join an environment that is particularly well-positioned to bridge theory, computation, experiments and applications.

Job description

We seek scientific excellence and future potential broadly in Computational Physics , with the aim of complementing and strengthening our current research activities. We are particularly interested in candidates who develop novel computational, theoretical, and data-driven approaches to address fundamental and emerging challenges in physics and beyond. The two open positions are thematically as follows:

  • Quantum Information and Computational Quantum Science: We seek candidates pursuing internationally recognised research in theoretical and computational quantum physics broadly related to quantum information science and technology. Relevant areas include, but are not limited to quantum computing and algorithms, quantum simulation, quantum-information-inspired approaches to many-body systems, complex quantum dynamics and tensor-network methods. We particularly welcome applicants developing new computational paradigms that integrate ideas from quantum information, high-performance computing, and artificial intelligence.
  • Complex Systems Physics, including Physics & AI : We seek candidates pursuing internationally recognised research in computational statistical physics, complex systems, and multidisciplinary applications of physics. Relevant areas include, but are not limited to, statistical physics, complex systems, nonlinear dynamics, network science, optimization, and physics-based approaches to understanding complex natural, technological, and societal phenomena. We particularly welcome applicants working at the interface of physics and artificial intelligence, encompassing both AI for science and the physics of AI, including the use of statistical physics, information theory, and complex-systems methods to analyze, understand, and develop machine-learning and AI systems.

Please indicate in your application which position you are applying for and explain how your proposed research would complement and strengthen our existing activities while creating new synergies across the Computational Physics Laboratory and Tampere University. If successful, you will be placed at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, based on your experience and expertise. Please also indicate the level for which you are applying, as candidates will be evaluated only for appointment at the specified level.

While in the early stages of your career the focus is on research, when you progress in our tenure track system you will be increasingly expected to contribute also to teaching, curriculum development and student supervision.

You will be expected to pursue and supervise world class scientific research in your topical area. Active collaboration with local, national, and global research partners, as well as industry is encouraged. You will be expected to secure substantial external funding for your research as well as nurture interactions with relevant stakeholders for societal impact.

Requirements

You should have a doctoral degree in physics or a closely related field. You should also have experience in scientific research in academia. Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows:

Assistant Professor we require:

  • ability to undertake high-level scholarly activity and potential to establish an independent agenda of scholarly activity at international level of excellence
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position

Associate Professor we require:

  • track record of independent scholarly activity on a high international level
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding

Professor we require:

  • high-level scholarly expertise
  • experience of leading scientific research activities
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction
  • track record of winning external research funding
  • track record of international scholarly activity

Please, read more about our Tenure track career path here

We offer

We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active and truly international research community. The multidisciplinary research environment offers opportunities to develop research expertise via collaboration, e.g., with different fields of engineering and natural sciences. We offer world class computing infrastructure through CSC – IT Center for Science and Tampere Center for Scientific Computing (TSCS).

Initial appointment as Assistant Professor / Associate Professor is for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member after the first five-year period. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

You will be supported by a start-up package that will ease your transition to Tampere University and in setting up your research group. The start-up package will be negotiated on the basis of your individual needs and may contain several elements from our financial instruments.

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees' personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System . A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4800-5300 EUR/month, for an Associate Professor approximately 5500-6200 EUR/month, and for a Professor approximately 6600-7400 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be negotiated for candidates with exceptional experience and/or performance.
