University Assistant postdoctoral
91 Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science
Job vacancy starting: 02/01/2027 | Working hours: 40.00 | Classification CBA: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc)
Limited contract until: three years.
Job ID: 6271
The Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science (CeMESS) at the University of Vienna conducts basic research on the structure and function of microbiomes at an internationally leading level. We are looking for a post postdoctoral researcher to support our nitrification team.
Your personal sphere of influence
The Division of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science (DoME, https://dome.univie.ac.at/) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher. The focus will be on the design and implementation of innovative enrichment and isolation strategies working as part of the nitrification research group. Our group focuses on various aspects of nitrification, ranging from ecology of different clades, physiology of certain strains to biochemistry of specific enzymes.
Your future tasks
The postdoctoral researcher will focus on developing and applying novel isolation methods, including high-throughput single-cell techniques, to enrich and isolate nitrifying microorganisms. Since standard isolation techniques often fail to yield novel nitrifying isolates, we are looking for a candidate with a strong background and proven experience in the cultivation, enrichment and isolation of nitrifiers from diverse habitats. Ideally, the candidate already employed highly innovative approaches to successfully enrich various ammonia- and nitrite-oxidizing microorganisms.
This is part of your profile
- Experience in developing successful enrichment strategies for ammonia and nitrite oxidizers.
- Expertise in applying various molecular techniques such as PCR-based methods and fluorescence in situ hybridization combined with microscopy.
- Experience in cultivation and physiological assays to study the metabolism of nitrifiers.
- Hands-on experience in single-cell separation techniques such as FACS or microdroplet is considered a plus.
- Phd in a relevant field
